"After I was given the brief on the theme of “Fun, Happy” for FotyMody I thought for sometime on how to shoot happy in Shanghai. Daily life in Shanghai is full of action and activities so I took our model to the common streets of the city. I wanted to shoot where every day Shanghai people go and not at the tourist spots. I picked the model in part for her red hair as I also see Shanghai as being very colorful so I wanted the images to have punchy colors. We got lucky on the shooting day as the afternoon was quite warm (a few days before it was actually snowing a little bit) for the time of the year. However, by evening it was cold and the model was doing her best not to shiver and to look comfortable in the spring/summer clothing. I had basic locations in mind, but I wanted a sense of spontaneity in the images so I also went about selecting the locations somewhat spontaneously. When we were shooting the noodles shot we were at a small noodle shop that faces a street corner. We bought the noodles and then just started shooting. In some of the shots you can see the noodle vendor in the background posing for the camera. Crowds of people formed to watch and the intersection on the street corner filled up with people followed by bikes, scooters and cars all peeping their horns to get through, but still trying to take a look at the model and the photo shoot. When I was shooting the image in front of the corner store, I kind of had the opposite problem as people tried to help and stop people from going in front of my camera – even though I wanted the bikes and cars to streak by! Shooting on the streets of Shanghai is always an event!"
