I recently read STYLE BARRON by Nick Barron and his article on Vivienne Westwood participation in Greenpeace’s ‘Flag for the Future’ competition in which people from around the world submitted designs for an official flag promoting the ‘Save the Artic’ campaign that is to be placed on the North Pole sea bed.  This is to raise awareness to protect the waters around the North Pole and to ban offshore oil drilling and unsustainable fishing in the Artic.  Their conversation was very informative so I’m just going to take bits and pieces of it and please watch the video.  I have never found anything in a thrift store from Vivienne Westwood but believe me it’s a goal of mine because she was a pioneer of the punk movement in London and her designs are light years ahead of the fashion curb.  Here is a excerpt from the interview with Vivienne Westwood speaking “I talk to fashion designers and say I want some money to save the rainforest and they say, ‘Oh, I agree with you completely Vivienne.  Yes, climate change, it’s definitely happening,’ but they don’t feel that they can do anything about it, they don’t even think ‘Well let’s stop it!’”   Later on in their interview she said something that really made me stand up and pay attention and here is that excerpt from their delicious interview.  ”Surely, though, the point of a fashion house is to keep churning out new ‘stuff’ to sell? Vivienne Westwood is not so sure anymore. “I have to much product and I’m trying to rein it in and sell more of my main collection.  I wish you didn’t have to design so often, it would be good if you could keep on selling the same things for  a few years and not have to do new things all the time.  For me (the idea) is to try to cut down on the quantity and to make everything quality.”  I absolutely loved reading that Nick Baron.  She isn’t a fan of disposable fashion and for that I’ve always given this Dame credit.  I’ve often said the exact same thing “if I were a fashion designer I would create a collection that would carry me for years to come and but I certainly wouldn’t do 2 of them a year .”  I admire her for making this claim and for all her help on global warming & keeping the North Pole in STYLE.  Now watch the video below and enjoy….
