Living Green Magazine recently praised four fashion designers for being eco-friendly; Stella McCartney, Loomstate, 100% NY & Carrie Parry. In 2011 Carrie Parry’s company was awarded The Ethical Fashion Forum’s Innovation Award and since then she hasn’t taken her foot off the brakes. Carrie was born in Los Angeles and graduated from Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London. Her passion is what drives her to constantly create new designs that are respectful and considerate of the environment. Her garments are all ethically produced in New York City supporting the local garment industry. Her fabrics and fibers are all sources right here in the USA and did I tell you that her cotton is all 100% organic? Here is something I didn’t know but read on her website – “Twenty-five percent of all agricultural pesticides are used on cotton, which has devastating impacts on our health, ecosystem and environment. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals. Instead, more sustainable agricultural methods are used to reduce/eliminate pests, enhance growth, maintain the soil quality, and protect the people who harvest the cotton.” When I was growing up in South Texas my dad was a farmer and one of the many things he planted was cotton so I can assure you that cotton is indeed heavily treated with chemicals. This is why The Thrifters are giving Carrie Parry The Awareness Award for 2013 because I want to support a designer that uses organic cottons, organic wools and silks that haven’t been treated to death with toxic chemicals. Thank you Carrie Parry for doing your part to make this planet healthier and above all for your vision & passion.
