Yves Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2011

8842923275?profile=originalThat's So New YorkThe sensational new collection for Yves Saint Laurent by Stefano Pilati was as tightly controlled as the models' chignons. He decided this collection to be an ode to the purest forms of the Saint Laurent codes, which were described as “impeccable," "stellar," and "perfection”, paired with the only decoration coming from scrolled gold cuffs and disc earrings, or a pair of gold, fin-heeled wedge sandals. Beginning with a trenchcoat and building—naturally—to Le Smoking, in crepede soir, he continued with bowed blouses, blasts of color, cabans, paysanne ruffles, clouds of marabou, long forties lines, exotica, erotica, and more. The YSL universe was celebrated at its most intimate yet creative version. The romantic seventies ruffles, in yet another Spring/Summer 2011 collection, turned up on two gorgeous chiffon dresses, one orange, one jade, in a thumbprint pattern. There were also precision-executed black jumpsuits with flared legs, and a drop-dead gray suit in a silk textured to look like crocodile. Least but not least, the quite classic yet chic finale look, a black jumpsuit with a long skirt and a multitude of thick black straps sweeping over the shoulders, captured the rare essence of chic; Pilati’s own idea of chic.

On the other hand, Yves Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2011 was not utterly convincing to everyone. Some said that “the problem with the clothes is they don’t get under your skin. They’re a little boring, if you really want to know.” While others do admit Stefano Pilati still hasn’t been able to engage the fashion tribe on the level that his clothes can be considered clear and impactful. Now it is up to the fashionistas around the world to decide whether they love or hate to wear Yves Saint Laurent’s newest collection. - Contributor Emi Papanikola
