The Kankakee Country Club is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, and one group of women kicked off celebrations with a Vintage Fashion Show and Luncheon Thursday.

It was the first big centennial celebration for the women, said Margie Mortell, chairman of ladies activities for the county club, which opened in 1916.

"We have something representing each era for the last 10 decades," Mortell said. Many guests also dressed in vintage clothes.

The event, for club members and their guests, was organized by event chairman Joy Rose. Models in the fashion show also were club members. The dresses, hats, jewelry and other accessories were supplied by sisters Madonna and Colleen O'Connor.

Featured fashions included a black dress created the same year the Kankakee Country Club

opened; a '20s dress made for dancing the fox trot, waltz and tango; a 1960 Anne Klein suede dress;and a 1968 wedding dress purchased at a prestigious boutique, Lillian's in Mattoon, priced at a mere $89.98.

Other fashions included a dress from designer Oscar de la Renta; a '70s power suit; and a white gown Donna Karlock wore at President Richard Nixon's Inaugural Ball in 1969.

There will be more upcoming event celebrating the club's centennial. June brings singer Nick Lynch, who appeared on "American Idol"; July 4th will have a family Olympics theme; and there will be a fall homecoming for past members who have moved away.Read more at:red formal dresses
