Not too long ago, I was in yoga at the gym and I noticed a woman that would be beautiful by most people's standards.  She was well put together, and was tall and thin, with hardly any body fat.  I guessed that she was in her 40s.  Her skin was clear and blemish-free, and her makeup emphasized her beautiful blue eyes, long lashes, and enviable bone structure.  Her hair was also well cared-for, having subtle highlights among her straight, long, silky-blond locks.

Yet in this class, when the poses called for slow, gradual movement her body was stiff, and she became frightened at new or unfamiliar movements.  Now, she was already physically beautiful (and I admire her for simply being in the yoga class) but I thought to myself, she has the potential to be so much more beautiful!  I could sense that this woman looked at herself through a perfectionistic lens, focusing on the negatives and being her own worst critic.  Her self-criticism manifested as muscle tension and stiffness, and in the end it prohibited her from enjoying each moment.  I felt that if she were able to let go and ease up on her negative self-talk, she could radiate a joy and confidence that would have droves of people coming to her.

They say that confidence can't be taught, but I like to say that if it can't be taught, it can certainly be encouraged.  When you have the clothes that support and flatter you, and when you have a personal stylist or image consultant helping you focus on your best assets, it's much easier to find an inner radiance that matches your outer beauty.  Let's remember to support our own beauty, both inside and out!
