This Saturday, May 16, SCAD will be hosting its annual fashion show at the SCAD Museum of Art. The show will feature the work of senior fashion and jewelry collections. There will be two shows on Saturday, the first at 4 p.m. followed by the evening show at 8 p.m. With less than a week left until the show, tickets are already sold out.
Every year, SCAD offers students in the fashion department the opportunity to work closely with figures who have made a name for themselves in the fashion world. This year the mentors include SCAD Style week speaker Juan Carlos Obando, Daniel Vosovic, Anna Corinna Sellinger and winner of the fourth season of Project Runway, Cristian Siriano.
Preceding the big night, on May 15, André Leon Talley will be honoring the legendary Vivienne Westwood with the André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award for her achievements in the fashion industry. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at Trustee’s Theater where ticket holders will view the award presentation and hear Westwood speak about her own experiences in the fashion industry.

On Monday, May 11, fashion students will find out if their collections have made the cut for the final show. Maya Shakur, a fourth-year fashion design major from Santa Fe, New Mexico is one of the hopefuls waiting to hear if their collection has been chosen for the final show.
“The journey has been very long and hard but its all related to my collection, which is about putting aside personal concerns to get the job done. I put all the feelings and stress back into my collection, so all in all it worked out to produce a collection that I am very proud of,” said Shakur.
Naomi Crumpley, a third-year fashion design major from Washington, DC will soon be facing the overwhelming task of creating a collection but in the meantime she watches as the current seniors put the final touches on their garments. In spite of the hard work she knows is ahead, Crumpley has confidence in the future.
“Knowing the process of the juror sessions, jury shows and selections of the final collections, I know what to expect for senior year,” said Crumpley. “Having a strong concept as well as excellent execution is key and I know that whether or not my collection is chosen next year, if I love it and tried my best, it’s more than worth the experience.”
Latifa Simons, a third-year fashion marketing and management major from Savannah, Georgia has been working closely with the senior designers this year as she prepares to model one of the potential collections that will be showing this Saturday.
“I love that for most of the seniors, the SCAD Fashion Show is the very first platform to showcase their collection to the world. The show is very sentimental in that way. As a model, I enjoy the fact that I help bring my designers’ garments to life. It’s a spectacular feeling,” said Simons.
With only a few days remaining until the show, the excitement on campus is growing whilst fashion and jewelry students prepare for their creations to walk the runway.
