Rules of the road: what cyclists need to know

More and more residents of Riga move around the city by bike every day. With the spring of cyclists on the streets of Riga is becoming more and more. According to statistics, more than half of the inhabitants of Latvia (52.1%) periodically ride a bicycle, but only 9.9% of the population of the country travel by bicycle regularly. And sometimes, unfortunately, all road users lack mutual respect for each other. To avoid conflicts on the road, it is important to remember the rules of the road concerning cyclists.

Sidewalk or bike path?

According to the Rules of the road, special attention is paid to the least protected traffic participants. The rules stipulate that cyclists should move mainly along the infrastructure intended for them, but if there is none, then along the roadway. And only in exceptional cases on the sidewalks, full-fledged "owners" of which are pedestrians. Exceptional cases - it is the weather, traffic on the roadway, repairs, or a dangerous narrow road.

Bicycle and children

Children of any age without rights can independently drive in yards and parks, and in other places where there is no movement of mechanical transport. Kids - naturally, under the supervision of adults. A child not younger than 10 years old can drive independently on the roadway or on the sidelines (subject to passing the exam and having a driver's license!). Riding on the roadway or the side of the road, accompanied by adults, is permitted to children at least seven years old. With children under 10 years must be an adult who has rights.

Once again we remind that children under 12 years old can ride a bicycle on the pavement (keeping to the right and respecting pedestrian traffic), especially if there is no bicycle infrastructure nearby. In bike lanes and bike lanes are allowed to move children of any age, but about 10 years - accompanied by an adult. And from the age of 10, the child must have rights.

Up to seven years old, a child can be transported in a special chair attached to an adult bicycle. For safety reasons, the seat is better mounted behind the back of an adult cyclist. The kid must be in a helmet, as well as in clothes with reflective materials. The child can be transported in a specially equipped for this trailer. The same requirements apply to the trailer as to the bicycle - it must be equipped with reflective elements, and at night -with a red flashlight at the back.

Clothing and accessories

At night, or in conditions of insufficient visibility, the cyclist must have reflective elements, and the lanterns must also be on the bike. The front of the flashlight should be lit with white light, behind the back - red. Clothing of bright color from the back is recommended, with reflective fabrics. The cyclist must be visible day and night. Visibility is provided by reflectors, flashlights (in the dark), if they are not present, a reflective vest is obligatory. An important detail: the bike must be a bell or horn.
