How to make the most of your freckles

Freckles are the curly hair of skin. Those who have, complain; those who don't have, want. Or as Kylie Jenner said last week on SnapChat, whilst posting a rare barefaced picture of herself: 'When everyone's drawing on freckles, but ur always covering yours.'

Which is another thing true of all freckled people: someone slags them off and suddenly you're their staunchest supporter. I barely ever tan, but give me half hour in the sun under a generous layer of SPF 30 and I look like I've been speckled. The initial effect is nice, but it leaves me not really sure how to 'do' my make-up, as my usual coverage looks too heavy.

Choose a foundation that shows off freckles - rather than hiding them

"Making the most of freckles is all about using products with believable coverage," says Mac senior artist Rebecca Butterworth. "Full coverage or matte foundations can turn the vibrancy of freckles into a muddy mask because freckled skin is made up of multiple tones and colours - a solid coverage of foundation in just one tone doesn’t work."

She recommends Mac Studio WaterWeight Foundation - an elastic-gel serum foundation that delivers up to a medium coverage, which is buildable while still letting your new facial accessories shine through.

"New luminous technology in foundations makes life easier for fellow frecklers as it lets the multi-tonality of the skin show through,'"says Butterworth. It also has a sun protection factor of 30, so any freckles you do have will at least be protected.

Another new favourite of mine is the Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation, which uses crushed pearl minerals to create a candle glow-like effect on the skin (funny that). It is buildable up to a medium coverage, which allows skin to breathe, rather than creating a mask under which all your perceived imperfections must huddle. I used it successfully on a recent holiday during which my freckles were ever multiplying.

Enhance freckles with a highlighter

Your next step is highlighter. "The best shades should contain some of the same warm tones as freckles to stop them looking ashy," says Butterworth. "Try highlighters of blushers that are apricot, rose gold, peach or copper, rather than gold, white or beige. Creamy highlighters such as Mac Cream Colour Base in Improper Copper or Hush make skin look luxe and perfectly groomed but not "made up.""

Tom Ford Skin Illuminator (£54) also uses micronised pearl to flatter all skin tones. Or, at a slightly less painful price point is Revlon Photoready Skin Lights in Peach, which can be mixed with foundation or applied to the normal highlighting zones.

Finally, make sure you finish off your freckle-perfecting with a helping of SPF. Bioderma's Hydrabio Eau de Soin can be applied as often as needed throughout the day - including on top of make-up.

"Sunbathing under a sieve" (so witty, playground bullies) never looked so classy.
