Weddings in the state of West Bengal are celebrated with much fanfare and can go on for several days. These festivities are divided into pre-wedding rituals, wedding ceremonies and post-wedding customs and these begin with a ritual known as Aiburo Bhaat and ends with the Oshtomongola ceremony. Traditionally, these matches are set up by matchmakers known as Ghotoks. A traditional Bengali saree and the doti kurta, is the attire of the bride and the groom, respectively.
The popular choice for the bridal saree is a red Banarasi silk saree, wlthough modern Bengali women opt for other hues of red like magenta or pink. The saree is draped in the traditional Bengali style and features heavy, intricate and exquisite gold and/or silver zari work. To go with this grand attire are heavy jewelry to match. The bride wears traditional gold earrings, natth or nose ring, chik and panch which are unique gold necklaces and a haath phool which is an adornment for the hands. Shakha paula or red, white and some gold bangles bridal bangles are the most important part of the accessories. Brides wear a white colored head gear which resembles a crown.
The groom’s attire is also just as resplendent with either a silk or cotton white dhoti that is teamed with a special top wear known as the Punjabi. Many modern grooms also opt for colorful dhotis although it does not feature any embroidery. The Punjabi on the other hand is heavily decorated and is made of silk. The groom wears an elaborate head gear known as the topor along with gold rings and chains.
The latest innovation in the wedding attires of Bengal is the prominent use of designer sarees and Punjabis. The maintenance of these outfits needs to be meticulous as they are made from the finest silk and other delicate materials.
