The summer ‘sole’mate

If the shoe fits, buy it in every colour, they say. And why shouldn’t you? Especially when a new fashion season has brought with it a whole new variety of designs to choose from? And, if you are looking to invest in summer’s most stylish pairs, the experts give you a low down on what’s currently trending.

According to Kamakshi Kaul, Vice President Design, Max Fashion, “One of the top summer trends to throw the spotlight on this year is the platform and flatform. They come in the brightest of colours and bold prints that can’t be missed.”

Kamakshi is all for transparent shoes as well. “Simple stiletto or block heels that have clear straps are popular at the moment. Embroidery is a major trend for spring, so give it a try with your footwear,” she says.

“This summer, the most popular styles would definitely be summer sandals and sneakers. With the city’s temperatures soaring, you would need to let your feet breathe through the day too. Of course, there are varieties to choose from, be it sandals with fringes, braids, or pom-poms. Glitter has made a comeback too. Cute bow detailed ballerinas would be super chic for those who don’t like showing off their feet,” states Veena Ashiya, Head of Brand, Monrow Shoes.

There are umpteen ways to flaunt your summer sandals this year as they are made to be paired with anything. “You can throw on a pair of culottes and a pair of cute pom-pom flats and you are good to go. Or you can even wear boyfriend jeans or shorts and pair them with some braided flats and a bright coloured T-shirt,” she suggests.

Sheina Alexander, a freelance stylist, states: “Mules are everywhere and for all the right reasons. They are great to pair with casual or formal clothing. This time around, don’t play safe with neutral shades. Opt for bright yellow or even candy pink instead.”

Sneakers have been a favourite and there’s no discounting their prominence during the summer months. “Influenced by the tennis shoe with statement socks, sneakers will still hold sway. Glitter will appear as an all-over application or like a trim to grab attention for sneakers as well as for stilettos. You could wear your sneakers and slip-ons with ripped jeans, long skirts with thigh-high slits or a Bohemian printed maxi dress,” Kamakshi adds. When it comes to shoes too, trends are of cyclic nature.

“If there is any kind of footwear to be left in the past this season, it is got to be sky-high stilettos,” Veena says, adding: “It is all about the kitten heels this season and our feet could not have been happier.”

As a chic alternative to heels, Kamakshi suggests to “wear pointy flats with an ankle-grazing dress and some futuristic accessories.

Also, known as the ‘glove shoe’, block heels can be considered ideal foil to a floral print dress or a suit. ”
