Next time you’re applying for a job you could find yourself doing so on your mobile, according to Google whose consumer survey found that 88% of people already use it to search for a job. With mobile internet usage set to overtake that of PC this percentage is expected to soar this year, with efforts being made to encourage people to not only search but apply for jobs on their devices too.

Plans for improvement

Tablets and smartphones are attracting more and more website traffic therefore employers are striving to react to this change by updating their application process in order to target this audience. CareerBuilder discovered that around 40% of mobile jobseekers were abandoning their attempts to apply via their mobile due to unfriendly and lengthy application processes. As a result, companies are improving their career websites and providing mobile-optimised jobs to make the process smoother. CareerBuilder’s updated mobile-apply process is an example of this with its mobile-friendly features reaching out to the on-the-go jobseeker. Many companies are expected to follow suit in order to attract the best possible audience to their vacancies.

Benefits for jobseekers

These improvements will not only enable employers to target on-the-go jobseekers, ensuring they don’t miss out on great candidates, but jobseekers are able to react to an opportunity as soon as it arises. This means there’s less time waiting around and no need to wait until you get home to apply, by which time you may have forgotten that brilliant opening line for your application. Furthermore it doesn’t matter where you are, so long as you have internet connection, you can ensure your job hunt is at the top of your agenda. There’s a debate surrounding whether applying via your mobile device can speed up the hiring process. It seems that whilst it certainly can on the jobseeker’s side of the application, the employer’s side the process remains the same. However as companies begin to get used to and improve these mobile-friendly application processes, perhaps a quicker method for feedback will soon be discovered. So keep a lookout for mobile-optimised sites as more companies are beginning to update their career websites to support this unconventional method which is growing in popularity.

What can you do?

To ensure you’re able to take advantage of the sites that provide mobile-optimised jobs, it’s important that you understand how to store your CV so it’s easily accessible via your mobile device. I can suggest you one proven tip from online resume editing services — you can use online storage sites such as Dropbox to upload any documents you may need, including your CV and cover letter. Another option is to create a PDF and save it on WordPress. Some companies may even accept your LinkedIn profile as a valid CV so look out for this option on the application and make sure your profile is professional and up to date. Keep a look out for mobile-friendly features when searching for jobs and when you come across a mobile-optimised job, have a go at applying via your device in order to practise this method.

How do you feel about applying for jobs via your mobile? Have you ever tried it before? What do you think are the advantages/disadvantages?
