Skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure in which the top layers of skin are removed, in order to encourage new, healthier looking skin to form. These are great procedures to help reduce the signs of aging, as well as reduce the signs of acne scars.
There are three types of skin resurfacing treatments; laser, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. In this guide, we’ll give you the low-down on the different types of treatment, what to expect, how to prepare and how to treat your skin afterwards.
The types of resurfacing treatments
As mentioned, there are three types of skin resurfacing treatment
Laser
This treatment involves using a laser to remove the top layer of skin. Depending on what you hope to achieve from the treatment will depend on how deep the laser penetrates.
Chemical peel
With this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layer and encourage a new layer to form. Different strengths of chemical peel are available depending on your goals.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion involves making very small holes in the skin using a fine needle. This then encourages new skin to form.
What to expect
Each treatment will have a small amount of pain but nothing terrible. A numbing cream or local anesthetic is likely to be applied, depending on what particular treatment you’re getting done.
Depending on what your goals are will depend on how many treatments will be needed to see the results. It doesn’t need to be used on the entire face either, and can be used to target specific areas of the skin if needed.
What to do before treatment
Make sure to follow your doctor's recommendations beforehand. This may involve applying certain creams or taking oral medication.
Avoid waxing or irritating the skin before the treatment. Also ensure to go to the appointment without any makeup or lotion on.
What to do after treatment
Once your treatment is finished, you may notice a slight redness to your skin, which is to be expected. Ensure to follow your doctor’s advice.
Avoid direct sunlight and apply a high factor sunscreen if going outside. Your skin will be particularly sensitive in the first few days after the treatment. If any scabs form, avoid picking them and let your skin heal naturally on its own.
