As per Express, wigs have been around for over three hundred years – but we’ve come a long way from fashioning fake hair made of real hair. Today’s wigs are typically artificial and long lasting, and they’ve changed how women and men alike can control their fashion. Within just a few minutes, you can completely alter your look, to the point of becoming nearly unrecognizable at first glance, simply by changing your hair. Hair plays such a big role in fashion and beauty that, on average, women spend over a month of their lives at the hair salon as per the Daily Mail.

Our own scalps are naturally equipped to deal with the hair that comes out through there, but when it’s time to slip on something synthetic, we want something that looks not just great, but amazing. Keeping it looking amazing will take a little bit of maintenance.

Every old wig can be freshened up and made to look just as good, or even better than it ever did. All it takes is a little bit of the right knowledge and a lot of the right product, and you’ll always have a beautiful wig to go with your new look.

Know When to Comb, and How to Comb

If you’re new to wigs – which you probably are, if you’re reading this – you should know that the products and tools you typically use to tackle regular hair are most definitely not recommended on artificial wigs. The only thing that might be recommended for use between both regular hair and revlon wigs is a pair of scissors if you feel the need to give your wig a little bit of a permanent edit.

That aside, however, you’ll need to stock up on some new things – including, most importantly, a brush. While you don’t have to wash a wig very often, brushing your wig is something you’ll want to do to make sure it keeps its shine. Wig combs work differently from regular combs – combs for natural hair remove loose hair strands and straighten your hair. If used on a wig, however, you’ll simply stretch the fibers.

Don’t comb daily – combing your Revlon wigs about once a week is enough, especially if you’ve got a quality wig from a reputable store like Wigs US.

Set the Wig Down

You can sleep with your wig if you’re really dedicated, but if you don’t want to stretch the fibers or risk them becoming contorted against your bed fabric, you’ll want to make sure you have a good wig stand to put your hair on. Simply setting it down isn’t great if you want to keep your wig’s shape.

Wash it Regularly

Regularly does not mean often. Generally, the rule is this – if you wear your wig on a daily basis, then wash it once a week. Otherwise, try and wash it once every 8 wearings or so. Washing a wig too often will damage the fibers. Washing it not often enough will break down the hair fibers as they get packed with your scalp oils and dirt.

You can use dedicated shampoo and conditioner specialized for wigs or, if you’re looking for a cost-effective alternative, XOVain recommends a mix of water and fabric softener in a 1:1 ratio.
