The reflective vests for motorcyclists

In the past year, Harald Fredriksen has sent several letters to the Ministry of Transport and Transport and Trygg Trafikk where he advocates ordering reflective vests for motorcyclists.

In guest books and at discussion forums, the debate for and against an injunction for motorcycle drivers rages on.

One of those who have been reviewed is the MC club Wings of Rogaland, which is Harald Fredriksen's club.

"I feel threatened by the entries in the guest books," says Healings Hiland chairman of Wings of Rogaland. Several posts can be characterized as "over the limit".

Helge Hiland has never advocated a reflective vest but uses it himself.

"Neither I nor the club thinks anything about what others should do, and have nothing to do with the proposal. I feel sorry for the club being drawn into this. I drive west because of my safety," he says.

Among the road safety experts, the proposal receives a lot of support.

In the debates at VG Nett, the proposal also receives a lot of support:

"I recently bought a new motorcycle and various equipment such as a helmet, jacket, trousers, gloves, etc. Consciously I bought a jacket with a lot of yellow in, AND with reflex! It is not that difficult to understand that this is better displayed in traffic. Safety in front of coolness. Too many motorcycle lives are lost in traffic."

In an unannounced survey on VG Nett, 68 percent of 1,379 readers respond that they are against the proposal to order reflex equipment for motorcyclists. 24 percent are in favor of an injunction, while 8 percent agree that such an injunction is correct.

An analysis published by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration in May shows that the driver can be charged for 8 out of 10 fatalities. The analysis deals with all fatal accidents involving motorcycles in Norway in the last four years - 127 in the figure.

In the period 2006-2009, there were 127 fatalities involving motorcycles in Norway. 90 percent of the drivers were men, and 40 percent of the victims were in the 35-49 age group.

The helmet is currently the only safety equipment MC drivers are required to use. In cars, it is mandatory to have a reflective vest with reflective tape easily accessible.

Harald Fredriksen, who suggested reflex orders for motorcyclists, tells VG Nett that he feared that his mind would be directed at him if he went out with his name.

BIKE's long-time editor, Morten Broks, believes the proposal for the reflex injunction is upsetting a large part of the MC people because an injunction will destroy the sense of freedom.

"Norwegian motorcyclists are probably reacting extra, as motorcycling for many is a lot about freedom, including when it comes to choosing a dress code. Then I think forced use of the yellow vest will feel discriminatory, not least compared to other road users. For example, it is not mandatory for ordinary cyclists," says Broks.

He also believes the opposition to an injunction may lie in the image.

"Motorcyclists dress up from which segment they belong for purely practical reasons. At the same time, you buy an image when you choose both bicycle and clothing. Yellow west with reflective material over the driving cover breaks with this image which is important for many motorcyclists," he says.
