The Joys and Comforts of a Readymade Dhoti

“I simply can’t manage to tie this properly, man!” Karthik said in exasperation after his 8th unsuccessful attempt to tie a dhoti. While the other friends laughed about it, I could sense the frustration on Karthik’s face. His sister, Krithika, 8843597473?profile=originalwas getting married in a week. Karthik had come down from the US and wanted to enjoy his sister’s wedding. He had planned to wear a traditional dhoti-kurta for the wedding. We had gathered at his home to try out some dressing options. Karthik wasn’t feeling comfortable tying the dhoti as he had hardly worn one in almost 15 years.

“Okay, let’s not do this now. Let’s get out of here.” Mani brought the dress rehearsal to an end and we all hit the road to go to our favourite hangout spot. I decided to help Karthik out. The next day I was searching for some clothing options for myself for Krithika’s wedding when I found something that suddenly caught my interest. It was a readymade dhoti for men. I immediately checked out the page and was happily surprised by the options. There were readymade dhotis in silk, mix silk and art silk. They featured bright borders of different colours. A pale white silk dhoti with a bright gold border caught my fancy. I bought it online.

The was delivered to me two days later and I immediately rushed to meet Karthik. When I gifted him the dhoti he was ecstatic and literally danced with joy. We rushed to his room where he tried the dhoti and it seemed to go well with a number of kurtas that he had bought. He tried a few other options but he finally decided to go with a golden yellow coloured full-sleeved kurta for the wedding function. He got my approval for his final choice.

On the day of the wedding, all our friends were surprised to find Karthik in a dhoti. They would have thought that with Karthik’s unsuccessful attempts to tie the dhoti properly, he would have given up on the idea of wearing it and instead would have chosen to wear a Western outfit. But here he was, looking resplendent in a beautiful dhoti and kurta. Just then Krithika entered the room. She looked at me and whispered, “Thanks.” I smiled at her and said, “You are welcome. Enjoy your wedding.”
