Social media pokes fun at Golden Globes fashion fails comparing Jane Fonda's ruffles to cakes and J Lo to a bottle of mustard

Awards season with its endless parade of gorgeous gowns has plenty to delight fashion fans, but sometimes looking out for the frock horrors can be a lot more entertaining.

And at last night's Golden Globes there was plenty of fodder for social media users who likened Jane Fonda's white ruffled gown to everything from a lampshade to a crème brûlée to a cake.

The veteran star, 78, stepped down the red carpet in a form fitting Yves Saint Laurent couture, with an unusual layer of ruffles at the neck.

'I kind of want to eat Jane Fonda,' Girl With No Job wrote on Twitter, posting a picture of the actress alongside a a three tiered cake with ruffled icing.

Divadepressao made the exact same cake comparison, while Leslie Benaroch also likened the the actress to a confectionery on social media.

She posted a picture of the actress alongside an image of Flanby - a crème caramel dessert sold in France.

Jane Fonda at last night's Golden Globes looks fabulous at 78, but the massive ruffles on this gown distracted from an otherwise-gorgeous look - and were turned into memes on Twitter

Meanwhile, another French Twitter user Leslie Benaroch had a different idea.

She felt the dress reminded her more of a lampshade, and described it as something that's 'impossible to separate from part of the furniture'.

RJ City thought her look was more Pierrot clown, saying: 'Tonight, Jane Fonda will be performing Pagliacci', referring to the name of an Italian opera, which means clowns in English.

Foodstuffs did seem to be the theme of the night though, with J Lo also getting a ribbing for her vibrant choice of dress.

The 46-year-old pop star and TV host oozed sultry sophistication in her caped Giambattista Valli‎ gown with figure-hugging ruching and thigh-high slit.

She wore her hair in a chic new 'lob' cut, but it wasn't enough to distract everyone from her ultra bright gown.

Amy Odell was not impressed, likening the ensemble to a bottle of French's mustard.

'J Lo shaping up to be first big fashion meme of the night,' she said.

And she wasn't the only one who was brave enough to step out in the notoriously tricky shade.

Ugly Betty star America Ferrera chose a canary yellow dress by British Designer Jenny Packham, and it wasn't long before she too was starring in a mustard meme alongside J Lo.

'Why does everyone look like mustard?' Katie Corvino wrote on Twitter, posting an image of the two women alongside a bottle of the condiment.

Actress Jaimie Alexander, who stars in Marvel films such as Thor and the upcoming Blindspot, was likened to a stick of chewing gum by Imgur user LemonRum.

Katy Perry looked striking as she arrived for the awards in a plunging pink Prada dress, complete with an ultra bouffant hairdo.

Girlwithnojob was not convinced however, and said there should be a 'Who Wore It Best' comparison between the singer and Patrick - the starfish from Spongebob Squarepants.

And MTV Style felt that singer and actress Zendaya Coleman had clearly taken inspiration from the flamenco dancer emoji when picking her outfit.
