Rules Every Cyclist Should Know

As the weather warms, bike enthusiasts and hobbyists have dusted off their vehicles, greased chains and rolled out onto the streets and trails. To enjoy the ride safely, it is worth repeating the basic rules of the road governing the behavior of cyclists. This will allow you to ride not only safely, but also without fear of being penalized.

Who can ride a bike? The carriageway or street can be used by persons under 14 years of age. Special cycling courses, based on the Highway Code, allow people over the age of 12 to travel in the carriageway. Under the supervision of an adult, cycling is permitted from the age of 8, and there is no age limit for cyclists in the living area.

Where can I go?

Bicycles can only be ridden on bike lanes or cycle lanes, and where there is no sidewalk, according to the direction of traffic. When there is no bicycle lane, lane or sidewalk, the sidewalk or one lane of the carriageway is allowed to run as close to the right as possible. A bicycle cannot cover the entire lane, just as two cyclists cannot cross the roadside by side - they must follow one another. If a bicycle section is marked with a horizontal sign or bicycle symbol, cyclists are only required to ride on it and as close to its right edge. The exception is when you need to drive straight ahead and not from the first lane. Also, when turning or turning left, the cyclist must choose the appropriate lane. Bicyclists are prohibited from driving in the carriageway if bicycle lanes are provided nearby. Motorways and freeways are also prohibited. At pedestrian crossings, cyclists are required to take their bike and not ride it. The bicycle rider must give way to pedestrians while driving on the sidewalk, pedestrian and bicycle path, sidewalk. Cyclists should be especially careful when riding on the sidewalk, as a child or an adult can run into the cycle path at any time. The pedestrian is allowed to travel at speeds close to his speed (3 to 7 km / h). If you notice pedestrians crossing the bike path, warn them - not only forbidden but dangerous.

What does a bicycle have to have? Proper brake and audible alarm. A cyclist can use his bicycle signal boldly, especially in situations where he sees an uninhibited pedestrian. There must also be a red reflector or red light on the back of the bicycle, with orange reflectors attached to the wheel spokes on either side. If you have a white light on the front of the bicycle and a red light on the back, you don't need a glowing vest. If such lights are missing or inoperative, the cyclist must wear a bright-colored reflective vest at any time of the day.

Do you need a helmet?

Cyclists: Police Encouraged to Wear Helmets Bicycle riders or travelers under 18 must wear a helmet on the road. For older cyclists, a helmet is recommended. Police check in from time to time to check whether cyclists are wearing a helmet - a fine of between € 20 and € 40 is payable when driving without it.

What does safe driving mean? Road traffic rules state that cyclists cannot ride with their hands behind the wheel - either or both. It is also forbidden to get caught in other vehicles - public transport, car, motorcycle or any other while driving. Cyclists cannot also be towed or towed by other vehicles. The exception is limited to specially designed trailers. Particular attention is paid to the issue of bicycle passengers - we often see adults or children sitting on bicycle frames. Doing so is prohibited. A cyclist may carry passengers if a special seating position is provided, such as a child seat for children.
