Imagine an up-scale marina, where the birds are flying around, hovering over the blue water, where the sun’s rays are reflected. The shine of the sun, the blue colour of the water and the white birds set the colour pallet for the new trends. Creamy ivory, bright white, bold red and navy blue are the colours that are currently hanging on the racks of most fashion stores.
The popularity of nautical themed clothing has grown tremendously over a short period of time, despite being around for years. Designers, such as Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors, often use these timeless and classic colours to create new and elegance garments. Even new designers on the fashion scene, such as Dreamland Apparel, are relying heavily on the basic nautical pallets for their clothing lines.
Growing Nautical Fashion Trends
Where the burst of nautical trends came from is unclear. Speculations could be made that in the stressful world of an economic crisis, fashions are resorting to a more relaxed genre. Using nautical themes to highlight this relaxed state of mind could be a method to remind people of the great things in life, such as sailing and habour-front walks.
Using timeless and classic colours that keep reappearing on designers’ colour pallets could also be a sign that designers are trying to get people to remember a time that was less stressful. These colours are a way to evoke memories.
Nautical Inspired Accessories
When garments reflect a certain style, accessories and handbags are sure to follow. There are many nautical themed accessories on the market and the new ideas just continue to take over the accessory paper editor's walls. For accessories, a common colour is gold. The idea of luxury carries over into bold theme of nautical wear by adding gold shimmer, golden necklaces and golden embellishments to handbags.
Necklaces and handbag straps are made with ropes, where additional embellishments are added, such as ivory pearls and shimmering diamonds. Rings are designed around large navy blue pearls and golden strings are added to make purses look more luxurious and elegant. Lastly, summer shoes, such as flip flops, and sunglasses have a dominant colour of navy blue, where only hits of ivory or red is present.
Whether the nautical look is one that will be followed by many has yet to be seen. While celebrities are wearing navy and white striped shirts more frequently, handbags with ropes as straps and golden anchor necklaces have yet to catch on. But the colour pallet of classic and timeless colours is here to stay.
