Municipality presents a draft ordinance to regulate this new transportation system. A woman was injured after being hit by a young man on a scooter.

They are everywhere and circulate in sidewalks, tracks, and bikeways. Electric scooters are a novelty in Lima and for users a quick, simple and, perhaps, economical way to mobilize. However, its use is not yet regulated in the country.

Therefore, some municipalities are preparing regulations to regulate this transportation system. This is the case of Miraflores, which proposes to prohibit traffic on sidewalks.

The proposal is made known after the accident suffered by a woman being run over by a young man who was riding an electric scooter on Salaverry Avenue in San Isidro. A security video showed the violence of the impact.

"(The draft ordinance) regulates that scooters cannot go by the sidewalk, necessarily have to go by bicycle lanes or by the road in the same direction of vehicles respecting the right side," said Carlos Ramirez, manager of urban development of Miraflores.

Speaking to El Comercio, he said that this project will be evaluated by the Municipal Council next week. In this document, a series of prohibitions is proposed to guarantee the safety of pedestrians.

He also explained that users must wear a helmet, reflective tape elements and special places where you can leave the scooters. The municipality has seized 145 scooters to date because they hampered traffic. It has imposed 63 thousand soles of fine.
