Mechanics and Clocks & Watches

Clock has been derived from the Celtic word Clagan and Clocca meaning ‘bell’. Primarily, the only purpose for clocks was to display time, but gradually with advancement of the world the purpose was extended and thus took the modification of clocks accordingly.

Six centuries ago, a revolution in the field of the science of clocks changed the whole perception in a completely different way. It was the introduction of mechanics that crept its feet and changed the scenario vividly. To divide time in minute intervals was the basic concept behind the mechanics of the mechanical clocks. Hence was an invented escapement, oscillator, pendulums, etc. And even today we can count time in seconds, minutes and hours.

The modern equipments like heating system, VCR or even a time bomb have the same basic principle of mechanics. It is this mechanics that has led to the extension of digital clocks and watches. Wherever we go, railway stations, churches, etc, we find the same mechanics used to display time either through mechanical clocks or digital clocks.

Even with so much sophistication with quartz watch today, the demand of the mechanical watch is still very high. According to an estimate its production annually is almost 10 billion USD, which itself shows the craze of mechanical clocks and watches. What an incredible invention it has been!
