Marc Jacobs: Fall/Winter 2011

8842922876?profile=originalThat's So New YorkMarc Jacobs  Fall/Winter 2011 collection seemed to be a combination of old and new. There was an obvious vintage influence conveyed by the 40’s silhouettes, yet at the same time a certain futurist quality added by metallic and other lustrous materials on display. Preparing for fall, you’d best prepare yourself for plenty of polka dots, a good deal of latex and lace, and a much more fitted silhouette. You could sense the feeling his clothes would give from the moment you come across the design of the runway. It was set against a tufted white vinyl padded wall, tufted columns in the same material lined the runway, and line sheets were in red velvet envelopes.

The first idea you get from this collection is that Marc was determined to improve and experiment with his old and highly-liked piece of clothing. Take the polka dots, for instance. The first collection he showed in New York 20-odd years ago was covered in spots. Here, they appeared large and small, even in three dimensions on a ponyskin sweater and skirt studded with plastic cabochons. However, the collection was much more than that. The clothes were as seductive as they were lady-like. Models came down the runway with the prevailing silhouette recalled the ’40s with a dash of Victorian–high-waisted pencil skirts and ultra-tailored dresses with oversized pockets at the hip or peplums to emphasize tiny waists, cap sleeves, open backs and jabots. Luxe materials like crocodile, lamb, sheared fox, sheared beaver and cashmere were mixed with fake crocodile, cellophane, and polyester. The collection was wildly imaginative, with the right essence of glamour and elegance, and despite the madness of it all, there are lots of wearable pieces for us simpletons! -
