How to choose the perfect party dress for Christmas

Party season is upon us and it's the perfect excuse to get glammed up and go out. That, of course, gives you a reason to go shopping. You might know what your perfect party dress looks like, you've just got to find it. Or, perhaps, you need to go out and hunt down that outfit.

The event
Firstly, where are you going? Is it a black tie dinner, drinks with friends, a work party or a meal with family? You could probably get a dress that's versatile enough for all those occasions but when you are out hunting keep just one in mind.

Your current accessories
Maybe you want to keep your whole budget for The Dress, in which case you'll need to think about what accessories you might have at home that would compliment it. If you don't have the jewellery, jacket and shoes to match your perfect dress then it might be worth buying them so the whole outfit ties together.

Your shape
There are dresses that will accentuate curves, hide flabby tummies, show off great legs and give a boost to cleavage. You'll need to know what your assets are and how to flaunt them. Check out Channel 4 Beauty's series of videos on how to dress for your shape.

Colours
If you don't know what colours suit you then it's likely that your family and friends do. Think about the clothes you have at the moment. Which items do you get the most compliments on? Chances are that those items are in shades that are particularly flattering. Take a look at this article from Fashion Beans on dressing for your skin tone.

Budget
As much as we'd all love to have an endless budget for party dresses, most of us don't. Think about how much you can spend and stick to that number. If you only have £100, don't go swanning into the nearest Gucci store. You'll just walk out disappointed.

You don't need designer clothes to look fabulous, anyway. The high street has some amazing offerings for all body shapes and sizes, ages and budgets.
