THE INTRODUCTION: Middletown native Lindsay and Newark native Kyle met in September 2006 at a friend's birthday party. Lindsay was 21, a graduate of Middltown High School working on a special education degree at Wilmington University. Kyle was 20 and working at a restaurant, but about to begin working as a landscaper. She was there with two friends, Phil Materas and Robby Hazelton. Lindsay spotted Kyle when he walked in the door and was instantly attracted to him. Robby knew Kyle and introduced everybody, and Kyle spent the party hanging out with them. Lindsay really liked Kyle's warm smile and his fun personality. He told her later that he had really liked her from the beginning, too, but she gave him her phone number that night, and he never called. He had suggested they all come see a band called the Disco Biscuits, though. About a month later, she went to see them, and Kyle was there. They hung around again the entire concert. This time, though, she got his phone number from one of his friends. She called and left a message. He called back and invited her to go for a walk.

THE FIRST DATE: They went to the Pennsylvania side of White Clay Creek, about a month and a half after they met, and spent a long time walking and talking.

THE FIRST KISS: They kissed at her apartment that day and began dating steadily. They went to concerts, festivals, camping and on vacation to Colorado. He really likes to fish. She really likes bird watching. About three years ago, they decided to buy a house together in Port Penn, which they love. They can go crabbing and fish right on the water. They had also been talking about marriage a lot by then.

THE PROPOSAL: In November 2011, they went to dinner at Iron Hill, where they got pizza and a pitcher of beer. She noticed Kyle was acting nervous and clumsy at dinner, and even forgot his wallet at the restaurant, but didn't think anything of it. It was a week before their anniversary of dating, so she was surprised and "beyond happy" when he did propose. They decided, however, the time wasn't right and to wait a while to get married. She wanted to finish her master's degrees in education at Wilmington University, for one thing. When they decided the timing was better, Kyle proposed again, but Lindsay says it's the first proposal she'll always remember and consider The One.

THE CEREMONY: They married Aug. 29, 2014, at Lindsay's parent's house in Middletown. Her mom had grown up on a farm, and Lindsay really wanted to get married at the old farm house across the street. Her mom insisted that if they were going to have to put a lot of work into the yard to get it ready, they should just have it at their home. Lots of family and friends came by during the summer to help them get ready, especially in the days right before the ceremony, and Lindsay says it couldn't have been a better way for people to show their love of the couple and support of the marriage. By August, the corn was tall, and the day was beautiful, the perfect temperature with bright blue skies and big fluffy white clouds. Lindsay's brother Kyle performed the ceremony, with the right amount of humor and sentiment. (Her parents call her husband K.R. to minimize the Kyle confusion). The couple's good friends Paul Leipald and Marissa Gilinsky Kritzinger did the readings.

THE DRESS: Lindsay wore an ivory fit and flare gown with ruching and silver crystal accents that she bought at Brides and Grooms in Newark.

SOMETHING OLD: Her grandmother Marge Smith's diamond engagement ring, which her grandmother had given to her, was tied to her flowers.

SOMETHING NEW: Her dress.

SOMETHING BORROWED: Her mom loaned her a mother's ring that had belonged to her own mom, Leola Davis, and featured birthstones from Leola's children. It was tied to Lindsay's bouquet, too.

SOMETHING BLUE: Her underwear.

THE RECEPTION: The reception was also held in the Smith backyard. They had big tents lined with white lights and paper lanterns, and decorations that continued their rustic mason jar theme. Lindsay's sister-in-law, Amanda Smith, had designed their invitations with a mason jar. Flower-filled mason jars were scattered around and the couple gave guests a mason jar mug as a favor. The custom-made cake topper was the silhouette of a groom holding a fishing pole behind the brides back with a bird sitting on the pole. The funniest moment came when Kyle "accidentallly" dropped some cupcake down Lindsay's dress when he was supposed to be feeding it to her. "He then had to go down there and get it out, with his mouth of course," she says.

THE HONEYMOON: They took a short honeymoon to the Poconos, where they hiked, went canoeing, enjoyed the outdoors and ate a lot. They hope to take a tropical honeymoon sometime this year.

THE FAMILY TREE: The bride is the daughter of Andria and Sheldon Smith of Middletown. The groom is the son of Marianne and Jeffrey Rogers of Newark.

WHAT'S NEW: The couple live in their Port Penn home with their cats, Leon and Sophie, both strays who are now house cats, and Linday's cockatiel, Harvey. She's had him for 10 years. Lindsay is a teacher for the Delaware Autism program and Kyle really enjoys landscaping.
