If you believe that a personal stylist and a fashion stylist perform the same duties, you could not be more mistaken! Fashion styling and personal styling are entirely different disciplines, despite how similar they may sound. An individual who crafts to look for specific clients and help them with other styling requirements is known as a personal stylist. A fashion stylist simultaneously collaborates with directors, artists, or models to curate looks based on various themes.

A personal stylist works with a person's image through the fashion lens and helps them discover their individual style. They regularly help them by fostering their styling requirements. On the other hand, a fashion stylist works on projects and cultivates within a framework that has already been established.

They primarily work on sets and deal with the more "glam" side of styling. Since a personal fashion stylist must complete training to become a fashion stylist, a fashion stylist can also be a personal stylist, and both roles' backgrounds and aesthetics are somewhat similar. Both of these domains cater to completely different target audiences with totally different requirements.

What do Personal Stylists Do?

Personal styling is a rewarding and successful career choice because it is a booming industry that is expected to continue to be very busy. A great personal stylist is one of the best investments people can make in their own self-care, as a noticeably higher percentage of prospective clients are realizing that their greatest investment is in themselves.

In collaboration with their clients, personal stylists create wardrobes and look that highlight each person's best features while complementing their physique, body type, personality, taste, and lifestyle. Making the clients look and feel their best while leading them on a personal style journey of outer and inner growth is the main goal of personal styling.

In order to create a wardrobe of looks that truly represent the client and bring joy while highlighting their best features and who they are, the personal stylist collaborates closely with the client to understand their goals and distinctive style.

The Personal Styling process typically starts with a meeting, historically referred to as a consultation, so the Stylist can get to know the client—what they do for a living, what they are passionate about, what their taste is, what colors they like and dislike, what their current wardrobe looks like, and so forth.

Personal styling is distinct from fashion styling because it is entirely individualized and requires careful research and planning to assist the client in dressing in a way that naturally flatters their physique, body shape, lifestyle, and personality.

What Do Fashion Stylists Do?

The majority of the time, fashion stylists collaborate with models on the photo and video shoots as well as fashion editorials for high-end magazines. The artistic director of the entire set or campaign may be chosen by a highly sought-after fashion stylist with an impeccable reputation, but the stylist's main responsibility is to put together outfits and accessories for the models that adhere to the theme or art direction.

Although many also work on personal styling projects, particularly celebrity personal styling, fashion stylists mainly fall into two categories: editorial and commercial.

Editorial, commercial, personal, and celebrity personal styling are all possible career paths for fashion stylists. However, those who are capable of taking on a variety of adaptable and high-profile projects are typically those who have honed their styling abilities and have years of training and experience.

Summary

All stylists are free to tell a story through clothing, but Personal Stylists and Fashion Stylists use this freedom in different ways.

Personal stylists assist clients in examining and editing their current wardrobes and acquiring new essential pieces to enhance their existing wardrobes in order to define and develop their personal styles and help the client look and feel their best. Similar to how a celebrity fashion stylist would, celebrity personal stylists also dress celebrities for the red carpet, press conferences, and music videos.

In order to promote a brand's products or help create stunning visual assets for publications, fashion stylists put together looks for models that seamlessly fit the art direction or theme of a photo or video shoot.
