How often have you had a good laugh at the dress your mother wore in the middle of the last century? You are absolutely certain that you would not want to be caught dead in those dresses! Yet, your mom would have been horrified if she had to dress like you do today, way back in her time! Fashions change and change rapidly. What is excellent fashion sense today is bizarre tomorrow! Let us look at some of the fashion trends of yester years. The Zoot Suit of the 1940’sWhat is that? This suit characteristically consisted of an oversized jacket with large lapels, padded shoulders and baggy pants that were cuffed at the ankles. The wearer accessorized the whole ensemble with a wide brimmed fedora hat. This fashion trend was popularized by teenage “hepcats”.Skirts of the 50’s and 60’sPoodle skirts were very popular in the 1950’s. These skirts were full skirts made of felt and were attached with a poodle patch.Mini skirts were a declaration of war on propriety and were very popular in the 1960’s. It is said to have originated in France or England and as soon as society began to accept the fashion trend, the popularity of the miniskirt declined! Perhaps the women had achieved their ends?T-shirtsThe Tie-dye T-shirts from Nigeria took the world in a storm in the 1960’s when the hippie/peace movement was at its peak. It was the sign of the psychedelic generation that imbibed free spirited music and expressed uninhibited love. It was the “in thing” and a stark contrast to the button down, starchy collared shirts of the seniors.PantsThe bellbottoms of the 1970’s overwhelmed and transformed the way one wore pants. It was a bohemian fashion statement and a symbol of the wildly stylish. These bellbottoms were made with polyester material. Did you know that these pants traced their origins back to naval uniforms?Leisure SuitsLeisure suits can be traced back to the 1700s. The suit made a comeback in the 1970s in a polyester version when the Lizards wore them across the United States. The ensemble included a shirt jacket and matching trousers. This suit was conceived as an informal alternative to Sports coats and suits. Later, these suits were ridiculed and even banned by restaurants and other establishments.Fashion trends that haunt us!Having said all this, we must acknowledge that there are some fashions that are so persistent that they come back to haunt the generations.
