The local police and youth council caught 284 cyclists during the 'E me velour campaign, who drove a non-traffic-safe bicycle in Knocker-Heist. 68 cyclists also ran into the lamp in Dammed.
"Many young people drive to the school, youth movement or sports club without being clearly visible in traffic," says spokesperson Isolde Van Enough. "Parents are not yet sufficiently aware that a traffic-safe bike and wearing reflective vests and reflective material can make the difference in traffic."
Results
The local police Dammed / Knocker-Heist checked 1,683 cyclists during the dark months. A total of 352 cyclists (or 1 in 5) drove a non-traffic-safe bicycle. Of these, no less than 110 bicycles had no or a defective bicycle light. The cyclists who were in order were given some spoke reflectors as a gift. The other cyclists received a police report (of warning) and had to put their bike in order within a week.
