Wearable Tech: Oh La La or Fashion Faux Pas?

With so much tech around these days, it’s inevitable that some of it would have wound up as fashion, well at least as wearable tech. Some of it was more stylish – and more successful – than others were. So what have been the biggest winners in the wearable tech wars, and which ones ended up on the fashion failure pile?

Hey Apple, Watch This

For many years the watch has been a staple piece to quite a lot of people, whether that being to tell the time accurately or simply as a fashion statement. These days everyone carries around a mobile phone with them which has a clock on it, making the humble watch somewhat obsolete for its original purpose. It was just becoming a fashion thing. So what did Apple decide to do? Pop a little computer where the cogs and clock face went and replace it with a little computer. And put smart in front of the word to create a new thing and hey presto: the Apple Watch is born. Now this one has been a certified hit, shifting over 20 million units worldwide since 2016.

The usefulness of the smartwatch has helped the popularity of wristwatches grow again, and they can do so much more than just telling the time. It can also act as a fitness tracker, a torch if it gets dark and a stopwatch. As well as that, you can sync your phone to it to get notifications on any texts, emails or calls that come in, and you can pay for stuff by using Apple Pay. Just hover your watch by a contactless payment pad and your transaction will be processed. How easy is that? It’s no wonder the Apple Watch hit it off. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, the watch can do so much more.

However, because it can do so many things (it’s like a Swiss army knife but for your wrist, but American and without a knife attached) it ain’t going to come cheap. Thankfully there are now a few more smart watches on the market like the Samsung Galaxy Watch and the Fitbit Versa, at least giving you choice. But the prices can be steep, so what can you do? Visiting Pugscode is probably your best bet. They find discount codes for a whole host of tech gadgets, meaning you can make savings on a broad range of electronics, not just watches.

Glass Disaster

Google Glass. Oh dear. Now this one was pushed really hard by Google, but never really caught on. And that was for two reasons really. The first is that no one really needed them. What could they really do? They gave you a little screen which sat in the corner of your eyeline and a little front-facing camera which you could use to film other people and invade their privacy. Oh, and the second reason? They look hideous. Sometimes you can wear a piece of modern tech and really pull it off, no matter who you are. Like going back to the Apple Watch, it looks good and you can change the straps if you wanted. The Google Glass (we can’t call them glasses because Google gets upset if anyone does) didn’t look like a conventional pair of glasses but more like a few bits of wire, you’d twist together for a primary school art project. They reportedly only sold tens of thousands of copies, way below their initial estimates. And they soon went away to fade into obscurity as a failed tech experiment. Or so we thought. Clearly seeing this as a Principal Skinner-type ‘no, it’s the consumers that must be wrong’ moment as they recently announced the launch of Enterprise Edition 2 model of the Google Glass in May of this year. We’ll have to see if this time it catches on.

And What Else?

A few years ago there was a prediction that wearable tech was going to be the next big trend, and the next logical step in transhumanism, albeit quite slowly. And the truth is that wearable electronic technology, apart from the smartwatch, hasn’t really caught on. You’d be hard-pressed to find a piece of wearable tech available to the mainstream consumer market that wasn’t a smartwatch. So maybe the wearable tech era has really kicked off, but only generated one lasting legacy from that fad.

However, whilst not strictly being fashion, there is another use for wearable tech, and it comes in the form of virtual reality headsets. Now, VR is a way of playing that is more immersive than ever before, and only ten-or-so steps away from becoming the Matrix. So if you are looking to take your game playing to the next level, what are the best VR headsets on the market?
