Transforming Abaya Styles, A Study from 90's to Present

Girl, abaya changed a lot, just like you! Now it is not a black long veil over you, it’s a new style which changed all the old definitions you have read before. Initially Abaya defined as a long full length black dress worn by women by many authors. But in the light of altering face of fashion viewpoint of women around the globe, the definition has been changed to full length outfit only. Conforming to Islamic culture and deep religious traditions, women must wear black abaya and men should wear white thobe in agreeable with code of conduct and decent dress code, thus Arabian countries social gatherings were looking like people crowded with black and white showing the lack of gender parity like dark and light. Now we have a break from that tedious black and white combinations with the touch of another colors also. How the abaya changed for last few decades? Let’s have a look over the makeover of abaya from last few time spans:

Different Weights of Black Silk in 1970s:

Less opaque black silks in different unit weights started being popular for stitching the abayas. By the end of 1970s, abayas for social functions became little bit different from previous years.

Shoulder abaya from Saudi Arabia in 1980s:

A new trend in abaya invented in Saudi Arabia with shoulder abayas. Various adornment techniques and more material experiments also continued in this era.

Umniyah in 1990s:

Still the basic design and pattern of abaya continued this period also, but more tryouts with heavy embroidery, beautiful laceworks, sparkling black rhinestones. From Oman, a new abaya named as ‘umniyah’ evolved to more women.

Heavy abayas in 2004-2007:

These years were the time for trials of heavy embroideries in countless themes and glittering rhinestones. Oops it was really heavy, you had to be enough strong to carry those.

Wings like a butterfly in 2007-2010:

The abayas were having wings like extensions

in sideways and which was a huge sensation for entire world. Multi-layer designs started holding their places in all displays of shops.

Trumpet Sleeves in 2010-2013:

Abayas were being stitched in trumpet sleeves which was accepted by everyone quickly. Experiments in adornments continued these early years also. Abaya with long flared overcoats having abstract art prints also started in this time interval. And soon it became a new fashion statement.

Painted with mild color shades in 2013- present:

Adding color to abayas instead of cliché black color was a huge revolution all around globe. This trend is the best invention ever happened in abaya designs. From these years, world famous designer minds begun with bold tests in unique patterns, mild color hues, selection of fabrics, trending embroideries, stone craft works and more. https://www.instagram.com/p/B1hLClKAbiC/

Surprisingly as a milestone in history, Saudi Arabia witnessed to first ever Fashion Week in April 2018 in Riyadh and presented number of striking outfits from region’s leading designers and brands including dashing tryouts in abayas also. That pageant proved that abaya just became crowd favorite apparel now more than a long full-length garment used to cover dresses you wore. It was an event which deserves to be engraved in golden letters in Saudi Arabia History.

Shapeless abaya now became a sharp designed gown which can steal a spotlight in red carpets also. When abaya gives a complete look expensive than any dress, you need to buy it more at less price. The range of abayas varies like beaded, high neck, embroidered, floral printed, pleated, lace patched, pearl embellished, block printed, abstract patterned, multi colored, shimmer detailed, metallic threaded, coined, sequins and many more.
