Originally a part of Bihar, the weddings in Jharkhand are comparatively simple but still extremely classy and sophisticated. Women prefer wearing silk saris while men opt for either dhoti kurtas or kurta pajamas. In contrast to the colorful shades of women’s wedding attires, men’s wedding garments are resplendent in white. Many a times, women also opt for a white saree with red or green borders.

There are three many ceremonies in a typical Jharkhand wedding. While pre and post wedding ceremonies see the women dressed in silk sarees in contrasting hues such as red and blue or orange and pink, D-day attires are traditionally the white saree with red or green borders. Tussar silk is without a doubt the most popular type in Jharkhand, making it the preferable fabric for wedding sarees. However, the embroidery on the saree is usually light on the body and heavy on the pallu and border. In recent times, other silks such as Swarnarekha and Anjana are being used. The traditional drape is figure flattering. Other traditional costumes for the women include the Panchi and Parhan, where the former is the top and the latter is the bottom. Accessories are usually in the form of gold or silver beads along with generous application of perfumes.

In earlier times, men used to wear only a single garment that resembled the dhoti and was known as Bhagwan. Recently, men have begun wearing a kurta over this traditional dhoti. In the urban centers of Jharkhand, men usually go for Sherwanis, which is essentially a jacket over churidar pajamas. These sherwanis are generally made of brocaded silk and feature embellishments on the collar, placket and cuffs.
The wedding guests at the wedding are also dressed in traditional silks featuring indigenous patterns and embroideries, in a conventional drape.
