2013 is the Year of the Snake, and fashion is having fun with the serpent! Now, I know some cringe at the thought of the coiled up hissing creature draped on any part of their body. I also know there are others who revere the creature for its attention grabbing qualities. The modern snake is actually a classic, dating back to ancient Egyptian times. There is varying opinions as to whether the meaning of the snake is a positive meaning or a negative one. In ancient times, the snake was one of the most widely utilized symbols in art, jewelry and fashion because of the many spiritual qualities and meanings it encompassed. Vindictive and vengeful, the snake was thought to be the epitome of evil in some eyes, but to others the snake symbolizes strength, wisdom, guardianship, and healing. The serpent was the symbol of both royalty and the deities associated with healing, such as the Egyptian goddess Isis and Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. It is still used today as a symbol of healing, most often seen on the back of an ambulance. Whether you think the serpent is good or just plain evil, this trend in fashion is still a fun one to play with.
