Kashmir is known for its use of heavy fabrics, owing to the climatic conditions as well as intricate, luscious embroidery techniques such as Kashida. The wedding traditions followed in the land are all the more glorious and glamorous, so much so that it has often been portrayed in Bollywood films. The population of Kashmir is a mix of both Hindu and Muslim communities. Muslim weddings in this region are heavily influenced by Iran, Turkey while Hindu weddings are influenced by traditions in other parts of North India. Although wedding garments are a lot more intricately woven and heavy than the daily-wear garments, the garment in itself is pretty much the same, such as the use of an outer kurta known as the Pheran combined with shawls.

Pherans find their roots in the Iranian culture and are worn by both men and women. It is a long kurta that is made .of wool and features ornate embroidery on the neck, hemline and cuffs. As a daily wear garment, it is worn by Hindu men with churidar pajamas, by Muslim men with salwars and by women with a robe that has zari embroidery on top of it. Pherans worn for weddings by Hindu women are long. Women throughout the region wear elaborate headgear with ornate skull caps. There are individual variants within the headgear category.

The main highlights of the wedding ensembles of women are the heavy accessories in the form of shawls, ornate nose rings, anklets, bangles and earrings. While Muslim women prefer silver jewelry, Hindu women wear Dejharoos that is predominantly made of gold.

The attire worn by the bride and the groom may also vary from tribe to tribe. Certain elements of the ensemble could be retained in their original form while others could be tailored to suit the preferences of the community in question.
