The right purple prom dresses can turn a starlet into a star overnight, just ask Elizabeth Hurley, Chrissy Teigen, Rebecca Judd and now Ruth Negga. In her custom Louis Vuitton dress the Ethiopian-Irish actress stole headlines at the Golden Globes from style stalwarts Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Overnight red carpet success takes months of planning with Ruth’s stylist Karla Welch, who also works with Justin Bieber, Felicity Jones and Robin Wright, approaching Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere in November.
"It's a custom piece made in the very special atelier in Paris," Karla told London’s Telegraph. "It's a combination of rose gold, yellow gold and silver paillettes- they were all sewn by hand and it took 120 hours to make."
The glittering column stood out with its chest plate detailing resembling a super stylish suit of armour and dramatic centre zip.
Fashion bible US Vogue has already declared Ruth the breakout star of the Golden Globes ceremony, hardly surprising considering that the Best Actress nominee for Loving alongside Australia’s Joel Edgerton is on the magazine’s January cover.
"We had mixed in quite a bit of Louis Vuitton to her press looks and we like mixing romantic and tough," Karla told Vogue. "Ruth is gamine and garçon, so it didn’t feel random to us.”
Ruth, the partner of actor Dominic Cooper from The History Boys and Mamma Mia!, is taking stratospheric success, 10 years in the making, in her stride.
"I am profoundly grateful for this recognition," Ruth told the Irish Independent. "This is such an honour. I am humbled to be in the company of all of these extraordinary, talented, and powerful women."
