Some weddings take months to put together, Drake Hancock and Taitlynn Perry’s took just a few hours.

Hancock and Perry have been engaged for several months, but at 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, they decided it was a fine day for a wedding.

The only thing left to do was to iron out the details.

“I don’t plan many things in life,” Hancock said. “I just let it happen. I work best under pressure.”

Perry said, “It just all fell together.”

Hancock inquired about a courthouse wedding, only to find that Houston County probate court no longer conducts courthouse weddings. That avenue closed, Hancock, who works as central supply sterile technician, then turned to his employer, Southeast Alabama Medical Center. Hancock asked his boss, Chad Hunter, if he and his intended could use the hospital and its chaplain for his wedding.

“I told him to ask for forgiveness rather than permission,” he said.

Permission was easy to come by, however. Hospital staff quickly approved the wedding and connected the couple with the hospital’s chaplain Willie Parker.

“Obviously, we’re not a wedding venue, but we do have a handful of weddings every year, usually it’s patients,” Steve Pearce, a hospital spokesperson, said. “This one’s a little different. But it’s Christmas time, they want to get married and we have the space here for an informal ceremony.”

Hunter said, “I think it’s nice that they decided to tie the knot here.”

The couple and a few family members and co-workers gathered in the lobby of the Women’s Center around 1 p.m. and after a brief ceremony, Hancock and Perry were married.

The new Mrs. Perry, a former employee of the hospital, is now studying early childhood education. Hancock is completing a degree in nursing.
