When your big sis (who happens to be Nicole Richie) provides style inspiration to fashion icons (including Kate Moss!) it stands to reason that some of that style mojo would rub off on you. And it certainly has happened that way for Sofia Richie. The up-and-coming model landed the first-ever cover ofPOPULAR‘s print magazine and spills on her embarrassing adolescent styling choices (we’ve all been there), her social-media prowess (she has 600,000 Instagram followers) and her favorite items in her very impressive closet.

“When I was 10 I would only shop in the guys’ section at the Gap,” she says of her less fashionable days. (Maybe she was just ahead of the normcore trend?) “All of my friends are like, ‘Look at me when I was a little kid, I was so cute!’ and it’s a picture of them in a tutu. I’m so terrified to show them my pictures, because it’s me in boy shorts and a ponytail and my brother’s shirt.”

These days she gets most of her fashion inspiration through Tumblr (although she admits she just created one to “stalk” her friends’ pages).

“I never really thought I would make a blog myself,” she says. “Then I got super interested in pictures and runways. I started following a bunch of model blogs and runway blogs and then I just started following designers. Sometimes I’ll see something on Tumblr and think, ‘Oh my god, how did I not think about this?’ ”

While her page is filled with editorial spreads, runway looks and lots and lots of Rihanna street style (so, like everyone’s Tumblr), she shares more personal snaps on Instagram.

“Instagram is just a way of showing the world a little piece of what you’re like,” she says. “You’re not really giving everything away — it’s not like you’re making videos every second; you’re just giving a little picture of what’s happening in your life. No one can really completely figure it out.”

While she keeps private, we did get a peek inside her closet, and we’re obsessed with her collection of designer boots (we’re talking Givenchy, Balenciaga, Chanel and Saint Laurent), long trench coats and, well, just about everything else.

By the looks of things, she’s doing just fine in the style department, but she did get one key piece of advice from her big sis. “Nicole has taught me that if you want something good, it doesn’t just happen … you have to work for it,” says Richie.
