Significance and Types of Wedding Bindi

The word bindi comes from the Sanskrit word Bindu which means a dot. The Bindi is largely part of Indian beauty and it not only enhances the look of the person adorning it but it also has cultural significance. The traditional bindi used to be round in shape but with changes in trends and fashion, the bindi is now available in different shapes, designs and sizes to sync with the structure of the face and the makeup on the face of the wearer. The bindi is worn by both men and women. In ancient times the bindi was made using leaves.

Significance of the wedding bindi

The bridal bindi is worn in the middle of the forehead at the space between the eyebrows. This place is referred to as the third eye and is known as the place for hidden wisdom and woman power. The bindi is mandatory for Indian brides but not for grooms. In India, it is the women who make the home and therefore wearing the bindi during weddings is believed to give the bride the wisdom and power to make the marriage work. It is believed that this ornament represents the inner strength and energy of a woman especially the red bindi. The red one is also believed to symbolize love and harmony in families.

  • Tilak

Even though bindis are mostly worn by women, they are not restricted to women only. There are also bindis for men called the tilak. Tilaks are worn by any man but are mostly recommended for grooms.  The Tilak symbolizes good luck and is worn by men when they are going for a mission for example when going for war or to negotiate a contract.
