Shu Uemura

Shu Uemura was a native of  Tokyo, and became a very well known Japanese make-up artist! He was the creator and founder of the Shu Uemura international cosmetics line which still bears his name today. Shu Uemura died of pneumonia in Tokyo in 2007 at the age of 79. Shu Uemura reportedly first became interested in hairstyling and make up as a teenager. He attended the Tokyo Beauty Academy,  in a class of 130 students, he was the only male!

The  filming of 1957's Joe Butterfly, was his first experience in film make-up. In the late 1950's he left Japan to venture into the film and television make-up business. With lots of success Uemura became one of Hollywood's favorite make-up artists!  He usually worked as a make-up artist apprentice with some of the most famous Hollywood personalities. Some included, Edward G. Robinson, Frank Sinatra, and Lucille Ball. Frank Sinatra's 1965 film, None But the Brave, was among his most  notable early work.

Uemura launched his first cosmetics product in 1960. Cleansing oil was his product, which left the skin clean and moisturized! His cleansing oil still remains popular in Japan today.

Uemura went back to Japan in 1964 to spread his techniques that he learned in Hollywood and opened the Shu Uemura makeup school! He created a cosmetics company called, Japan Makeup in 1967. That is when he opened his first boutique store in Tokyo! In 1983 he changed the name of his company to Shu Uemura Cosmetics. From that point on,  Shu Uemura Cosmetics became a major force in the domestic Japanese and international beauty market.

French cosmetics maker L'Oréal bought his company in 2004, but, he remained the creative force behind Shu Uemura Cosmetics after the sale. The company now has stores in Paris, New York City, London and Hong Kong, as well as outlets throughout Japan. The company's product line has expanded over the years to keep up with the times to include hair and lifestyle products, perfume, fake eyelashes and handmade makeup brushes. Shu Uemura's eyelash curlers were even mentioned in the 2006 film, The Devil Wears Prada!
