Meet the beauty brand scrapping mark-ups and selling mascara for £1.87

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a £4 lipstick and one priced £21 ? The theory that ‘you get what you pay for’ has allowed the prestige cosmetics industry to thrive for years. However, it could all be about to change with Beauty Pie, the latest and easily most game-changing brand from Marcia Kilgore, the brains behind Bliss Spa, Fit Flops, Soap & Glory and most recently Soaper Duper.

The digital-only make-up brand, which launches on 8th December is cutting out the middleman and allowing you to buy direct from the factories that also supply the majority of make-up to well known luxury beauty brands. Those who sign up and become a member of Beauty Pie can buy a lipstick for £3.43, a mascara for £1.87, and foundation for a mere £5.29.

“It’s a beauty addict’s buyer’s club,” Kilgore told this month's Vogue. A club that is not only democratising the industry and making mascara affordable to the masses, but one that makes you seriously question the price of your current beauty haul.

So, how does Beauty Pie work?

Kilgore wants Beauty Pie to be an online community that allows those who are obsessed with make-up to buy great formulas without paying marked-up prices. To become part of the community and get your products at cost price you have to sign-up and pay £10 a month, for a minimum of three months. Those who don’t want to join can still buy the make-up, but at premium prices. While a lipstick will cost members, £3.43, non-members will have to pay £20.

How do Beauty Pie's products compare to others?

Lots of beauty brands manufacture their make-up products in the same factories and formulas can be incredibly similar, especially when it comes to lipsticks and mascaras which only have around eight ingredients. Beauty Pie is taking out the added extras, including the heavy luxe-feeling packaging, to cut down on price. Although some people could say the similarity between Beauty Pie’s simplistic black and white packaging to several renowned beauty companies is uncanny.

The company promises customers transparency

It’s not just affordable make-up that Beauty Pie is offering. The brand will also be offering customers full disclosure on how much money has been spent on packaging and formulations, as well as providing a list of ingredients. If you’re still questioning the idea of Beauty Pie and the quality of its formulas, copy and paste the ingredients into Google to see how many other brands come up…
