How to make grey hair soft and shiny

Most women over the age of 30 can count at least five grey hairs, and some of us spend time – and money – in the salon having them reinstated with colour every six weeks. But what if you don’t want to keep covering up?

While celebrities and influencers, including Helen Mirren, Vogue’s Sarah Harris, and models Maye Musk and Yazemeenah Rossi, have helped prove that grey hair can look chic, there’s little guidance on how to look after your greys. As someone who’s had a grey streak since the age of 15, I can say with some authority that grey hair can be high maintenance. It is naturally coarser and drier than other hair, which is why you often find that greys stand up.

Using a hydrating product, such as Ouai Treatment Masque, £25 for eight sachets, at least once a week will help with this and give your hair a healthy shine. “Grey hair has a specific texture and needs specialist ingredients to give the same shine and luminosity as pigmented hair,” explains celebrity hair colourist Josh Wood. Pro Brilliance, his latest haircare range, uses Keratec IFP PE, a protective keratin that helps revive and brighten greys. Thanks to the kaolin clay, the Pro Brilliance Embrace Hair Mask also helps remove any yellowness.

So, is Wood hoping more of us will embrace our greys? “I don’t think people will opt out of colour, but grey hair has been given permission to be more glamorous, and with more innovative products it doesn’t need to look granny-ish.”
