Are you down with the understanding of fill power and fill weight?
Yes, it is winter. And yes, it is cold (depending on where you currently are at the moment...). I guess that now is as good a time as any to learn about down. More specifically, lets learn a bit about fill power and fill weight.
Fill power is a number that denotes the quality of down. The higher the fill power, the fluffier the feathers. These fluffy, or lofty, feathers trap air pockets that create a layer of insulation between the cold air and your body. Since this depends on the quality of feathers, rather than the quantity, comforters with a fill power of 750 actually weigh less than those with a fill power of 500. The lower the fill power, the more feathers required to acheive the same level of warmth.
Fill weight is the quantity of down in comforters, jackets, sleeping bags, etc. The more feathers, the higher the fill weight.
Now you are ready to produce, sell, market, or purchase down jackets... OK, maybe dealing with down garments is actually a bit more complicated then simply knowing the meaning of fill power and fill weight. However, knowing this information certainly can not hurt.
