There are some seasonal style clichés I try to break whenever possible, like designating (faux) fur to winter and neons to summer. Jewel tones– the dustier, deeper cousins of your warmer-weather brights– have typically been associated with autumnal collections, but really, they're only a few shades away from the striking bold hues we associate with summer.
Because I am a firm believer that any color can be styled appropriately for any season, I've come up with three ways to style strong jewel tones this weekend:
1. Girls' Night Out
If the depth and intensity of jewel tones scare you, try wearing bright colors as accents for your next night out. The three primary colors work really well together if you're just starting out– just make sure they're all equally bold!
I love the cutout and diamante detailing of this Topshop romper– if you're worried about pulling off bright colors, versatile pieces like this work well as 'experiment pieces.' Start with a bright red lip and simple accessories, then work your way up to the jewel tones and the neons. Bonus: You'll get a different look every time you take the intensity up a notch.
2. Backyard Barbeques

For a Saturday barbecue, mixing a tank top with jewel-toned bottoms is a really effortless way to make a statement. I styled these emerald shorts with a pale lavender top to brighten things up, and went with these on-trend, gold lace-up gladiators.
I've extolled the many virtues of ostentatious wide-brimmed hats, but here's one more: they go with everything, because they're a statement piece in a neutral color. I love this white straw hat because the black band makes for interesting color contrast, but if Topshop is out of your price range, Wet Seal has a super-cute alternative.
3. Sunday Brunch

If you've read my previous CF posts, you'll know that I love color-blocking– but if you're just getting started, it might help to pair bright colors with something that's patterned, but in a neutral hue. I've gone for a crop top with interesting lace detail, which adds texture to the skirt's eye-popping color and trendy wrap style.
Since yellow and green are complementary colors, I added in pops of emerald for dimension. This marble-swirled clutch plays really nicely against both the white and green elements of the outfit. It's also a definite conversation-starter at Sunday brunch!
