I have never tryed to sell fashion sketches, Buyers buy clothing they wish to try,.... small shops try garments out too...see if you can get your sketches made into samples and then see if you get your samples made into a small production run (200 pieces) each item,...I am far from an industry guru but those are just tips I have read or got from industry insiders. Drawing on paper is good. It's good to scan them 1) for your record 2) so you can create an online portfolio. Some companies like illustrations to be done by hand and others like computer aided designs (CAD). Usually the mass market companies prefer CAD illustrations b/c it makes the design process faster. When you design on computer it usually just flat illustrations. (not that complicated) Who ever you work for will usually have templates that you will work off of. Companies that do one-of-a-kind designs go more towards hand drawn sketches. I think if you can get comfortable drawing on paper and understanding the human figure, proportion, and how to illustrate the drape of fabric it will make learning it on computer much easier.
I saw your question asking "How can someone start publishing their illustration?" For starters it's best just to contact editors of fashion illustrations books. For example Martin Dawber of Big Book of Fashion Illustration I say that b/c that's what I did a few months back complimenting him on his book and he mentioned he was doing another edition and to submit some of my designs. I was lucky enough to get some of my designs picked.
What I realized is that these publishers/editors are looking for illustrators to fill the pages and are always working on the next edition. So I've begun contacting them and sharing my work.
You might want to setup a coroflot account so when publishers ask to see your work you can easily send them a link to your entire portfolio. The site is free.
I work on a site called WouldYouRockThis.com for fashion illustrators and I see that's how they find a way to get published sometimes. Great way to gain notoriety and clients when your work is in a book say in Barnes and Noble.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else. Glad to help out other fashion illustrators.
