A Cultural History of Skincare

Different countries are known for different things. You might associate the Chinese with tea, kung-fu, or Chinese Buddhism. Maybe you associate the Scottish with their national animal, which is the Unicorn. By the way, we didn’t make that up.

Maybe you associate the United Arabic Emirates with Dubai culture, or The Netherlands with bicycles, windmills, and french fries. There are a lot of countries that have a lot of cultures, and even the ones that we’ve mentioned have been criminally understated. Cultures are complex and usually have centuries of history.

Even the country of France has a long history of all sorts of things. In fact, when you hear the word “France” you probably think of things like:

  • Art
  • Fashion
  • Food
  • Architecture
  • Wine

All of those things would be correct. France has always been on the cutting edge of all of those worlds.

One industry that the French often don’t get enough credit for is the skincare industry. The French have been at the forefront of the skincare industry ever since the beginning of skincare products being easily available on the global market, and were even a part of the initial push.

Here’s a fun little fact that most people don’t realize, France actually had one of the first aesthetic medicine labs in the world. There were others before it, but France was the first to have a full laboratory dedicated to the research of the skin and skincare products.

It only makes sense with the French attitude that skincare would be important. Keeping your skin healthy can reduce signs of aging for a longer period of time, and with how fashionable the French are, it only makes sense that they’d want to crack the code for youthful skin.

Of course, during the beginning, a lot of the research was done on injectable skincare products. As time went on, many companies realized that they should also make topical creams, gels, and lotions to help with daily skincare needs. They already had a lot of knowledge of how skin worked, so this was an easy switch.

Since then, thousands of French skincare companies have popped up to make as many high-quality products as possible for as many different types of skin and skin conditions as possible. It really is quite an impressive market in France, and that is reflected by its popularity.

A Market Designed for Quality

If you live in the United States, there is probably one of a few ways that you go about getting your daily skincare products on a regular day. Here are the most common ways to go about it:

  • Going to a Big Box Store.

Big box stores are very popular here in America. Stores like Walmart and Target are all over the place. Because of that, a lot of people go here for decent enough skincare products.

  • Going to a Pharmacy.

There are a lot of chain pharmacies in the United States. You usually don’t go to them for skincare products unless they’re either prescribed or you just don’t care about what you’re using.

  • Going to a Specialty Store.

Specialty stores are where a lot of people that take their skincare routine very seriously go to get their skincare products because they usually have a selection of high-quality products.

  • Ordering Online.

The internet has made an easy way for all of us to get the products that we want without having to leave the house. A lot of people pick this route because it’s easier and cheaper than heading to a specialty store.

All of that is fine and dandy, it’s a system that works for us here in the United States. You can get a range of products with a variety of different qualities depending on the place that you go to get your skincare products. It’s easy, but it’s not the best system.

In France, most people go to the pharmacy to get their skincare products. That might seem confusing to people that aren’t from France. Why would you strictly go to Rite Aid to get your skincare products? Well, things work a little differently in France than they do here.

For example, there is no such thing as a chain pharmacy in France. Every pharmacy is owned by a pharmacist, and each pharmacist is allowed a single pharmacy. That changes the ecosystem of pharmacies in France drastically, and you can see it in the way that shelves are stocked.

Pharmacists take their stock very seriously. They want to make sure that you’re getting products that are working well for you. It only makes sense, if you get good products at a specific pharmacy, you’ll want to go back there because they took good care of you with their product choices last time.

That directly translates to bigger profits for the pharmacy, and no business dislikes making more money. So, pharmacists take great care to pick the best possible products to stock their stores with in hopes that they can make more return customers want to do business with them.

Skincare products in France have to be able to impress pharmacists in order to have even a slight hope of being competitive on the pharmacy shelves, and if you can’t compete on the pharmacy shelves, your product will not be able to operate in your home country. That means that skincare companies have to always put their best foot forward.

All-Around Good Products

In case you didn’t know, there are a few different types of skin and a litany of skin issues that you can have. Dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, the list goes on. Each skin type needs different care.

You can get products that are specifically for your skin type, and that is a good thing. You should find products that are specifically for your skin so you can make sure that it’s getting the best possible care for its needs on a regular basis so you don’t run into bigger issues.

France is good at their specialty products that are good for specific skin types and skin conditions, but France is also good about making products that can be used by anyone. That’s very important for products no matter what country they happen to come from.

That means that anyone, whether they have dry or oily skin, can find products that will work for them and get them the care they need. When you’re looking at French products, you can feel assured that you can get something that’s as specific or as generalized as you need it to be.

Quality Makes the Difference

A lot of people have skincare routines for various reasons. Maybe they want to keep their skin as soft and healthy for as long as possible, maybe they want to fight off the effects of aging, or maybe they want to fight off any skin conditions they have.

Regardless of their reason, knowing that there are French skincare products on the market to help them achieve their goals is always something that people appreciate. There are a lot of reasons why so many people love these products and the variety of high-quality products doesn’t hurt anything.
