What are the different types of gemstones?

7-Tips-to-Identify-Gemstones-In-the-Rough

Gemstones are known as rocks or minerals that are found within the Earth in its purest forms. They are dug by the miners and are polished to make different kinds of jewelries. Apart from that, they are also used for research purposes, for cutting any hard metals or rocks, for astrological purposes and in electronics such as in watches.

Gemstones have always been the favorite types of stones due to its attractiveness and durability. Due to excessive digging in the past, these stones have become endangered and are profitable if anyone can find any.

Although there are more than 2,000 minerals that were found, only less than 100 of them are used as gemstones. Not all the stones are completely pure and are mixed with other stones, but there are six precious stones that are completely pure. These are:

  1. Pearl: Pearls are used in making pearl jewelries, in clothes, cosmetics, medicines and paints. The specialty of the pearls is that they do not originate from the earth, but from the ocean in the seashells.
  2. Diamond: Diamonds are one of the most popular kinds of gemstones that are in use till date. Not only are they used in making jewelry, they are also used in making windows, cosmetics, engraving and medicines. The real diamonds are very expensive, so they are made in labs or mixed with other elements. For instance, moissanites are diamond stimulants that are designed to provide an illusion of diamonds.
  3. Ruby: Rubies are mostly used in making stunning jewelries. They are also used in lasers, watches and medical instruments due to its red fluorescence.
  4. Sapphire: This stone is blue in color and is used in making watch crystals, scientific instruments, and high-durable windows. Sapphire is the most durable type of stone occurred naturally.
  5. Emerald: This stone is used in making fine jewelries. Moreover, they are also known as traditional birthstones and are thought to provide inspiration, wisdom and patience.
  6. Alexandrite: This stone may come in red or green in color. This stone is very rare and has healing properties. The stone is believed to bring good fortune and increase confidence as well.

Gemstones are always being compared in terms of their durability, price and the type of gem. For example, there is a debate in between white sapphire vs. diamond as to which type is better.
