Congratulations Sofia! – How do you feel about being one of the 3 amazing winners of Front Row Society’s Handbag project?

I had a lot of fun designing for this competition. There were a lot of ideas popping! I started to get more excited, when I noticed that I was on the shortlist of most voted designs. When I was named one of the winners, I almost couldn’t believe it! My boyfriend had to say the words “you won!” just so I could believe that I really was one of the winners.

Can you explain a bit about your process of design – where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I have a scrapbook with things that I like or that i find inspiring, that work as my database of inspiration. Apart from that, I get inspiration from music, magazines and everyday things.

What is your process? Are you happy with how it turned out in the end?

Design brief followed by brainstorming, of course. Colour study. The common process, I guess. For this competition, I submitted two designs. For Mondrian+ing, I thought about big universal and artistic references and gave it a twist. I love Mondrian and I find his painting style timeless. Mondrian inspired in a 45º degree new color scheme. I was glad people liked it!

Do you have a background in design?

I have a degree in Product Design and I have recently finished a complementary course in graphic design.

How would you describe your artistic style? How has this style developed over time?

Simple, practical, with a catch, geometric and sometimes symmetrical. I’ve tried doing things differently but somehow I found out that this is what I am as a designer.

What are your plans for the design industry – do you plan to move forward professionally within the design industry?

I plan to continue challenging myself and trying to improve my design skills in competitions to grow my portfolio.

What do you think about the voting process that Front Row Society offers?

I like how easy and simple the voting process, and that you might have a chance to have your design produced if you are on the top 10 list and not only the top 3, as usual in other competitions.

Are you considering submitting more designs to Front Row Society? What are your plans for the future?

Yes, I think i might! When I read about Front Row Society – I loved the motto “your idea. your design. your choice”! It has good challenges and it is a real opportunity to show some work.

Is there a designer whose graphic prints you really admire?

More than one actually. I admire the work of Patricia Urquiola, Hella Jongerius and Martín Azuà, just to name a few.

Do you have any suggestions for all the designers out there, considering submitting to FRS design challenges?

You have to put yourself out there, and the FRS contests are great challenges, with design briefs, moodboards and instructions to help you present your idea. Great way to start showing your work!

Where can we find you work?

I’m quite new at this and I’m still working on my online portfolio, collecting more projects, both product and graphic design. But you can look me up onhttp://be.net/sofiasantosneves.

Finally, only if you want to reveal, do you have any exciting ways to spend your prize money?

I might save it for a trip! I miss traveling! There’s still so much that I want to see out there! Inspiration’ traveling!
