Chelsea Manning Makes Fashionable Debut in Vogue's September Issue

Chelsea Manning has made quite the Vogue debut.

The army veteran and trans movement icon was photographed by the legendary Annie Leibovitz wearing a cherry red, classic pinup-style halter swimsuit by Norma Kamali for the pages of the September issue of American Vogue — the glossy's most prestigious issue of the year.

"Guess this is what freedom looks like," Manning wrote on Twitter alongside the image lensed by the same woman who photographed the issue's It-girl cover star Jennifer Lawrence. The 29-year-old Manning was released from a commuted 35-year sentence in May of this year after being convicted of violating the Espionage Act by releasing hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks.

In the accompanying profile by Nathan Heller, Manning details her early family life and the confusion she felt regarding her gender identity as an adolescent, which eventually led her to seek structure in the military. She also explained her struggle to find an outlet to publish the documents she wished to make known to the public. "We need to have more ways to talk about what's going on in government," she said.

Manning also opened up about her personal passions, including her fashion infatuation.

"I've been a huge fan of Marc Jacobs for many, many years, even going back to when I was wearing men's clothing," she said of the designer who himself is an outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ community. "He captures a kind of simplicity and a kind of beauty that I like — projecting strength through femininity."
