Tussar Silk, also spelled Tassar, is referred to as Wild Silk in India. It is one of the most favored among the silk fabrics in India. The fibers for Tassar silk are obtained from the cocoon of the wide-winged moth. The moth like its cocoon is yellow in color. Therefore, the resulting Tussar silk fabric is gold in color, generally speaking. Not much is known about how, when or where Tuusar silk was actually discovered however, silk itself has been a part of India’s culture since the Indus Valley Civilization.
Jharkhand is the primary producer of this textile, in the country. The making of Tussar silk has been taken over by women, by and large. The effort that goes into its weaving is extensive because it can take as many as 3 days just to produce 10 meters of this fabric.

One of the biggest reasons why Tussar silk dominates the market is because it is a cheaper variety of silk, when compared to many others. This reduction in cost primarily comes from the fact that the source insect is not put on a diet of Mulberry leaves. At the same time, Tussar silk has a lot more visual as well as physical texture. Its appearance is a little rough and if one rubs the fabric against itself, there will be slight scraping noise. However, when worn, the fabric is extremely smooth, shiny and doesn’t cause any kind of discomfort.
Tussar silk sarees form the ideal base for Kantha work. This goes to show that there is a lot of scope for embroidery on this fabric. This fabric has also been used in the making of men’s ethnic wear garments such as kurtas and jackets. This fabric can be maintained easily through the process of dry cleaning.
