The Pros and Cons of Online Shopping

In the modern world, online shopping is the norm. We’ve all seen the videos of people reviewing the things they bought online and a plethora of eCommerce website ads to have your shopping needs met. But looking past the global obsession with online shopping and next-day delivery, consumers might question whether it is truly worth all this hype.

Online shopping, like everything else, has its pros and cons, some of which are as follows:

Pros of Online Shopping

More Variety

One of the biggest appeals of shopping, in general, is the variety it offers in terms of what we can buy, and few things give as much variety as online shopping.

In a few clicks, you can have thousands of items at your fingertips to choose from, many of which you might not find in-store or from brands that might not be in your area. You can search for online shopping tips to know when and how to get the best deals.

Delivery Options

One of online shopping’s biggest strengths is that you can have practically anything you want to be delivered to your doorstep, usually within a few days. This means you can buy an entire closet’s worth of clothes and not have to carry them home yourself, which is a major pitfall of in-store shopping.

And with more stores offering express shipping, the things you want could even be delivered by the next day!

Shopping Reviews

Online reviews are one of the biggest upsides of online shopping. When you’re looking to buy an item online, you can instantly find thousands of reviews to help aid your decision, including pictures and videos from other buyers.

In fact, there are entire websites like PissedConsumer.com that are dedicated to online shopping reviews, meaning you’ll not likely be in the dark about whether a product is good or not.

Cons of Online Shopping

Impulse Purchases

Online shopping thrives on consumers’ overspending, and this has been made easier than ever with cheaper options and installment payment plans on many websites. As such, there is the temptation to buy more than you would in-store because you do not have to pay for it all at once or bring it home yourself.

Falling Prey to False Advertising

While this is less likely these days thanks to the prevalence of consumer reviews, buying something online comes with the risk of falling prey to false advertising because you can’t see the item in real life.

There is an entire trend online of ‘what I ordered vs. what I received’ with consumers expressing disappointment at being misled by false advertising.

Losing Out on Real Life Experiences

While online shopping has many benefits, it deprives you of the experience of being in a brick-and-mortar store and exploring shopping options in real life, including meeting friends and discovering new places.

There are upsides and downsides to online shopping, as listed above. It is, thus, up to each consumer to decide on which carries more weight when choosing their shopping experience.
