The Many Types of Clergy Found Around the World

Clergy are often talked about when speaking of religion.  Clergy are typically some of the most significant leaders within religions around the world. Although the types of the clergy vary greatly in differing religions, clergy men and women usually lead religious rituals, teach doctrines and traditions plus adhere to the strictest religious rules. Clergy is a universal term and sometimes these men and women are called clergyman, clergywoman, cleric, churchman, churchwoman and / or cleric.

Within the Christian religion, each clergy name and their individual roles differ by the type of Christian denomination. Some of these roles include the Pope, deacons, bishops, priests, preachers, pastors and ministers. In Jewish tradition, a religious leader is often a rabbi, cantor or hazzan.  In the Islam religion, a leader is typically called an imam, mufti, mullah or ayatollah.

Many women around the globe are also now looking to become leaders in their religion. Some religions have historically looked at men to be leaders, but in modern-day religious practices, women surely have more freedom. However, some religions have been less inclined to adopt women as clergy.

Many clergy men and women wear various religious robes.  Those looking for clergy robes for women have many options unlike they did in the past.  Clergy robes are usually ankle length and come in various colors, such as white, black, red and purple.

Deacon - A leader in the Christian Church that is typically related to some type of service. However, the role varies among theological and denominational traditions.
Preacher – This individual is someone who preaches a religion.
Pastor – A pastor is typically the religious leader of a Christian Church.
Minister - A person sanctioned by a church to perform tasks, including leading services such as weddings, baptisms or funerals.
Rabbi -A Jewish scholar or teacher that specializes in the Jewish law.
Cantor - A religious official that sings liturgical music and leads prayer in the synagogue.
Hazzan – Similar to a Cantor, a Hazzan is a Jewish musician, or precentor, trained in the vocal arts.  He / she assists in leading the congregation in song and prayer.
Imam – This is the title of various Muslim leaders, especially of one succeeding Muhammad as leader of Shiite Islam. This person specializes in leading prayers in a mosque.
Mufti – A Muslim scholar and / or legal expert who has the authority to give rulings on religious matters.
Mullah – The name applied to a Muslim man or woman who is knowledgeable on Islamic theology and law.
Ayatollah - This person is an Iranian Shiite religious leader.
