The Hunt for Warmth = the Right Coat

Here ends another cold week in the North East and now my mission has reached critical stage.  I have been on a mission to find the right coat to replace my beloved long wool coat that is surely saying daily: fix my lining or retire me! With old man Winter hanging on even though Phil saw his shadow, I’ve been bargaining with my coat to see me through this season while I look for its replacement. Like everything these days, choices abound as well as a whole lot of confusion, especially when you are looking for that one coat shouting at you ‘buy me‘. Hopefully, what I found on my search somewhat eases your mind when you find yourself embarking on a similar hunt.

In the world of coats, and yes ladies there is an entire world, an inkling of an idea of  the coat you want to buy and its purpose helps more than you can imagine. No, specific clothes hunting is not for the faint of heart but for the brave; since, most of us don’t even know what we’ll be wearing tomorrow and if you’re like me juggling two kids under five, you  sometimes don’t really care as long as you match.

All that said, I’ve come to the conclusion that coats come under two categories: light coats (i.e. leather coats, short coats, trenches) or as is sometime said coats you know you’ll freeze your rear in but look good doing so  and heavy coats (i.e. wool, tweed, furs, suedes, shearlings).  Those are the coats you can put a great amount of layers under and not look like the Michelin man walking down the street; especially, if you find yourself a little more on the voluptuous side.

Designers this season freshened up classics, like designing a more military flair in both the single and double-breasted pea coats. They also brought flair with asymmetrical front closures, more belts and of course a wide range in the color palette. Ladies, I say like my favorite fashion man, Tim Gunn, embrace color.  This season plaids, cascade fronts, military flair and red coats are hot!

After you have found the right length, style and color for you (which for me is a longer, wool blend pea coat), price is next thing to contemplate. Remember affordable is always the name of the game. With this piece being in your closet for at least three winters or more, buy your next coat off-season. Which fortunately for us, this is the off-season for winter apparel in the fashion world. You now have the tools I’m using to choose my next winter coat.

So what am I getting? Well, I will post here when I get it which is oh so soon! With February being the the month of love, I will end by saying as my best friend’s favorite sitcom does:

XOXO
